There is a lot of anger among the people of Rohini about the Delhi MCD as the problem of stray animals has persisted in the area for a long time.
Here, when the accident took place on August 10, the victim’s daughter told us, ‘At around 8.30 pm, someone called from her father’s phone. After being hit from behind, he fell on his head and got injured. Doctors tried to stop the bleeding and treat the wounds, but the injuries were too serious. “Stray animals on the roads have been a major problem in the area,” says Preeti. A few days ago our mother was also attacked by a stray cow, now we are afraid to take our children outside. The matter was raised in the pocket association but nothing happened.
This family is not the only victim of such accidents in Rohini. According to a report in Times of India, Preeti says that the police had said that they would register an FIR only after recording the statements of eyewitnesses, but that did not happen. Delhi Police claims that the family has not filed any complaint.
Another resident of Rohni said that stray animals from nearby villages block the roads and sometimes attack the residents. Often these cows belong to dairy owners. They milk the cows and let them loose on the streets.
Stray animals are managed by MCD with the help of NGOs. But the Municipal Corporation did not comment on the matter. Officials of the municipal corporation had earlier said that overcrowded cow sheds have made the task difficult in the past few years.
