Ukraine says its air defenses shot down 60 of 93 Russian drones as Moscow stepped up its airstrikes.
One person was killed and four others were injured when a Russian drone targeted the Ukrainian capital Kiev, military and civilian officials said, as Russia resumed bombings across the country.
The Ukrainian Air Force said its air defenses shot down 60 of 93 Russian drones launched at Ukraine since early Friday.
Moscow’s military has stepped up airstrikes across Ukraine in recent days, including a drone strike targeting central Kiev on New Year’s Day that killed two people.
A truck driver was killed by drone debris in the latest barrage, according to Mykola Kalashnik, acting governor of the Kyiv region.
He said several houses were also damaged by the debris, injuring four people, including a 16-year-old boy.
The Ukrainian Air Force said another 26 drones were “lost”, in reference to Ukraine’s use of electronic warfare to redirect Russian drones.
In total, Russian drones targeted nine areas across the country, including Kiev, officials said.
Residential homes and commercial buildings were also damaged in the Donetsk region in the east and the Chernihiv region in the north, the military said.
On Thursday, the Ukrainian military said it had carried out a high-precision strike on a Russian command post in Maryino in Russia’s Kursk region, where Ukrainian forces are still holding the area after a major incursion in August.
The Russian military said air defense units shot down four Ukrainian missiles in the area, and the regional governor said the strikes damaged a high-rise apartment block and other buildings in a nearby village.
