The central government is recruiting judges in the Supreme Court as well as in the Supreme Court. The government told Parliament that in the last 7 years, more than 700 judges have been appointed in many high courts in the country. Of this, 127 judges appointed come from scheduled caste, scheduled tribes and other backward classes. However, 37 members of the minority community have also been appointed as justice.

In his written reply, Minister of Law Minister Arjun Ram Migwal also said that the appointment of judges in the Supreme Court and 25 high courts of the country were made under the provisions of the constitution, which does not provide reservation to any caste or class.

Justice made 38 from the SC-ST category

The government told the upper house on Thursday that 715 judges have been appointed in the high courts since 2018, out of which 22 are from caste (SC) category, while 16 scheduled tribes (ST) are from the category, while 89 other backward classes (OBC) category. In addition, 37 judges have been appointed from the minority society.

Migwal said in the Rajya Sabha that the government is also determined to increase the social diversity in court. Since 2018, it has been necessary to provide the details of their social background to the judges of the High Courts (candidates) in a fixed form.

Number of judges in Supreme Court 33

He told the House, “Based on the information provided by the recommendations, 22 of the 715 judges of the High Court appointed from 2018 are categories, 16 ST category, 89 OBC categories and 37 are minorities.” The government is also requested by the Chief Justice of the High Courts to send a proposal for the appointment of judges to appropriate consideration of the scheduled castes, scheduled tribes, other backward classes, minorities and women, to ensure social diversity in the appointments.

There are currently 33 judges in the Supreme Court, while the number of judges approved in the country’s largest court is 34. Calcutta High Court Judge Justice Jumriya Bagchi was appointed justice of the Supreme Court on March 10. He took the oath of office on March 17, and at the same time, a total of 33 judges have been made in the Supreme Court.
