New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday appreciated the passage of Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025 in both houses of Parliament, described it as a “watershed moment”.
The controversial law approved both houses of Parliament after a comprehensive debate, in which Rajya Sabha passes it after 13 hours of discussion. The bill was found in favor of 128 votes and between 95 in the upper house, while the Lok Sabha approved it with the first 288 assistants and 232 anti -votes.
In a post on X, PM Modi emphasized that the law would especially benefit the marginalized sections of the society.
“The passage of the Waqf (Amendment) Bill and the Muslim Waqf (Relations) Bill by both houses of Parliament marks a watershed moment in our collective search for socio-economic justice, transparency and inclusive development. It will especially help those who refuse margins and opportunities for a long time,” he said.
The Prime Minister thanked the MPs for their participation in the discussion and accepted the public contribution to the Parliamentary Committee.
“For decades, the Waqf system was synonymous with transparency and lack of accountability. It especially damaged the interests of Muslim women, poor Muslims, Pasmanda Muslims. The legislation passed by Parliament would promote transparency and protect the rights of the people,” PM Modi said.
He said, “Now we will enter an era where the framework will be more modern and sensitive to social justice. On a big note, we are committed to prioritizing the dignity of every citizen. It is also how we build a strong, more inclusive and more compassionate India,” he said.
The bill faced strong opposition from India block parties, which labeled it “anti -Muslim” and “unconstitutional”. Opposition leaders, including people from Congress, TMC, DMK and other parties, alleged that the law was designed to facilitate the acquisition of Muslim properties for corporate interests.
The Parliament also approved the supplemental Muslim WAKF (Real) Bill, 2025 during the same session.
The government defended the law as a “historical reform” to benefit the minority community and promote inclusive development. Modi insisted that these changes will help in creating “a strong, more inclusive and more compassionate India”.
