Another cyclonic storm is likely to hit the Bay of Bengal by October 23. While issuing the alert on Sunday, the Meteorological Department (IMD) said that due to this, heavy rainfall may occur in the coastal areas of Odisha and West Bengal.

A cyclonic circulation over the Andaman Sea may turn into a low pressure area over the Bay of Bengal in the next 24 hours, the Meteorological Department said in its special bulletin. The system will move in a west-northwest direction and may turn into a depression by the morning of October 22 and become a cyclonic storm over the east-central Bay of Bengal by October 23.

“It is then likely to move northwestward by the morning of October 24 and reach north-west Bay of Bengal from Odisha-West Bengal coasts,” the Met department said. The Meteorological Department said that under its influence, coastal areas of Odisha and West Bengal may receive heavy rain from October 23 to 25. The department has advised fishermen to return to the shore by October 21.

IMD director general Mrityunjay Mahapatra said the system could develop into a severe cyclonic storm. He said that from October 23, some parts of Odisha are likely to receive heavy to very heavy rains. He told a local TV channel, ‘On October 24-25, some places in the coastal region may receive 20 cm of rain. Rainfall may be 20 to 30 cm and at some places more than 30 cm. He said that the IMD has not made any prediction about the location and intensity of the landfall.

West Bengal and Andhra Pradesh may also receive light to moderate rain, the bulletin said. Gusty winds of 40-50 kmph to 60 kmph are expected over Odisha-West Bengal coasts from October 23 evening. From the night of October 24 to the morning of October 25, its speed may gradually increase to 100-110 kmph and up to 120 kmph. The IMD said that the sea condition is likely to remain bad during this time.
