Earlier there was talk of giving independence to India in June 1947.
In fact, in May 1947, Lord Mountbatten, the last Viceroy of India, went to London to meet Prime Minister Clement Attlee. So that the partition of India can be discussed. Initially, there was talk of freeing India in June 1948. But during this period, when communal feelings flared up and spread, Britain decided to liberate India a year earlier.

Attlee also approved the Independence Plan.
Mountbatten took his plan to 10, Downing Street and presented it to the Prime Minister and the Cabinet. After independence, it was decided to keep both India and Pakistan in the British Commonwealth.
Attlee approved Mountbatten’s new plan. Now there was a big obstacle left for them to liberate the two countries.

Lord Mountbatten arrived in London with the plan in May 1947. Prime Minister Attlee and his cabinet gave the green signal to his plan.

Because Winston Churchill was the Leader of the Opposition in the House of Lords. He also had to approve, his approval was not easy. The Conservative Party was also in the majority in the House of Lords. If he wanted, he could have postponed the Indian Independence Bill for another two years.

Everyone felt that Churchill was not in favor of giving independence to India. But after meeting Churchill, Mountbatten convinced him. It wasn’t easy though.

The partition of the country was announced again.
On 02 June 1947, when Lord Mountbatten was sitting in the study of the Viceroy’s House, Jawaharlal Nehru, Vallabhbhai Patel and Acharya Kripalani visited him. All these were leaders representing the Congress. He also came to meet Muhammad Ali Jinnah, Liaquat Ali Khan and Rab Nishtar of the Muslim League. Baldev Singh was present on behalf of the Sikhs. Mahatma Gandhi refused to be present.

Mountbatten declared when is the date of independence?
The next day after this meeting, the partition of the country was announced through All India Radio. Mountbatten explained in a press conference how the division would take place. Journalists from all over the world participated in this conference. He had so many questions. In the same conference, Mountbatten stated that the date of India’s independence has been fixed on August 15.

When Mountbatten announced the date of India’s independence as 15 August, Indian astrologers immediately opened their calendars and said that this was not the right time for independence. So it was changed. Independence was taken at midnight on August 15, instead of being achieved during the day.

Even the Indian leaders did not know what would happen.
It was the same day that Japan announced its surrender in World War II. Mountbatten was the Supreme Allied Commander in South Asia at the time. When he announced the date, there was a stir in Indian political circles. No one in the House of Commons, Downing Street and Buckingham Palace, the prime minister’s residence, could have imagined that Mountbatten would suddenly overshadow Britain’s important history in India. Even the Viceroy’s closest associates in Delhi had no idea what Mountbatten was up to. Not even the Indian leaders who spent hours with him recently.
