It appears Jerry Jones wants to see the Dallas Cowboys rebuild.
This offseason, the word “negligence” comes to mind when describing the Cowboys. They lost longtime left tackle Tyron Smith to the New York Jets. Tony Pollard moved to the Tennessee Titans. Center Tyler Biadasz moved to the Washington Commanders. And the list goes on.
Most insultingly, the Cowboys didn’t move quarterback Dak Prescott or stud receiver CeeDee Lamb.
Entering his ninth season in Dallas, Jones is still hesitant to commit to Prescott for whatever reason. This offseason, we’ve seen the quarterback market boom with big deals for Jordan Love, Tua Tagovailoa and Trevor Lawrence. But Prescott is still waiting, and he’ll be an unrestricted free agent after the season.
The same applies to their No. 1 weapon, Lamb, who was Dallas’ first-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. In his first four years in the league, he has established himself as one of the best pass catchers in football.
Jones still wouldn’t make a commitment to Lamb. On Thursday, he said he “There is no urgency to it” To make a deal for their top wideout.
Maybe Jerry is lying. Maybe the Cowboys will make Lamb the highest-paid non-quarterback ever. Maybe Dallas will do the right thing by getting out of their way for once.
But for now, Lamb has every right to be angry about the situation. He has amassed 5,145 receiving yards and 32 touchdown catches in four seasons. He’s just 25 years old.
Lamb’s response to Jones’ comments today was spot on.
Lamb has every reason to laugh out loud. This whole situation surrounding the Cowboys is ridiculous. Their situation is completely insane. The Cowboys have an opportunity to lock up their own premium young receiver during his prime and they won’t do it.
Again, maybe Jones has a master plan here. Maybe he doesn’t favor Mike McCarthy as the team’s head coach. But why wouldn’t you want to keep your superstar player with you?
There are at least 20 other NFL teams that would like to add Lamb to their roster. Sure, if the Cowboys have a bad season, they could sell Lamb for a king’s ransom at the NFL trade deadline. But even if Dallas is heading into a rebuild, I think Jones would want to keep at least one marketable star.
The longer this drags on, the less cheap he’s going to get. And he has to play out his fifth-year option. Jones should probably feel some urgency because his star receiver is publicly laughing at him. And so is everyone else.
