Charlotte Edwards has been appointed as the head coach of the England women’s cricket team.

The former England captain replaced John Lewis, which was dismissed in Australia in winter in view of a 16–0 ash as tourists lost all seven matches on a courtesy tour.

Edwards led England for more than 50 World Cups and T20 World Cup titles of 2009, while he also won three Ashes series in a 10 -year spell as captain between 2006 and 2016.

The 45 -year -old has since been enriched as a coach, winning the Women’s Premier League with Mumbai Indians in 2023 and 2025, and two years ago with Dakshin Bahadur.

Edwards directed the now-a-domestic southern wipers to three Rachel Heho Flint Trophy titles and two Charlotte Edwards Cup, later named after a staller playing career with a T20 tournament, with over 10,000 international runs.

England also need a new captain with Heather Knight – who was successful as the captain of Edwards in 2016 and a year later went to win the 50 -over World Cup on the soil of the house – was removed from the job after the ashes.

Edwards: I will always get emotional about this team

Edwards, whose first game of England will be against the West Indies in Canterbury on 21 May, said of his appointment: “I am very happy to be a part of the team leadership once again.

“I can’t wait to take this team forward and inspire us to success. This means that for me the world again has three lions on my chest.

“I was my life for 10 years, the leading England as Captain and I will always be emotional about this team and our heritage. We have such a talented group of players, and I am excited about working with them and improving both individuals and as a team.

“We have an immediate challenge of two homes summer series, and then it is directly in the ICC Women’s World Cup in India, with a domestic ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in the next summer.

“There is also a possibility of Olympic’s mouth water for the first time for women’s cricket in La 2028. I am remembering the possibility of winning the trophy and taking this team forward.”

Sky Sports Cricket Commentator and Pandit Charles Dagnol feels that Heather Knight’s departure as England captain was unavoidable.

Potential replacement for nights include the vice-captain nut skiver-bunt, off-spinning all-rounder Charlie Dean-Wipers worked under Edwards in wipers-and left-arm spinner Sophie Allestone.

England A is currently touring Australia, with the former U19 Captain Grace Screws T20 Group and Durham Skipper Holi Arms as in -charge of the 50 -over party, so they may be out of candidates from outside to succeed.

England’s senior side play six white-ball games (three Odis, Three T20) at the West Indies’ house from May 21, followed by five T20s and three Odis against India in June and July.

He will then travel to India in autumn for the 50-over World Cup-a tournament that he finished runner-up in Australia during the 2022 edition in New Zealand.

England hosted the 2026 Women’s T20 World Cup and would be watching the event for the first time after the inaugural edition in 2009, losing to Australia in the 2012, 2014 and 2018 finals.

England’s results in the last two T20 World Cups contributed to the dismissal of Lewis with host South Africa ending in the semi -finals in 2023 and then dumped a group stage in UAE in 2024 after the West Indies defeat.

This second disadvantage occurred when the team put a ragged fielding display under the skivor-bunt stevardship, quit five catches, while the night was out of the field with a calf issue while batting.

What went wrong for England in ash?

Sky Sports’ David Russia:

England’s Ashes expedition was blurred by Misssteps, which had inability to criticize spin, regular fielding blunders and bizarre words and behavior.

Premier spinner Sophie Aclestone refused to interview former team partner Alex Hurtle, as England’s fitness was later questioned after exiting the T20 World Cup.

Furthermore, coach Lewis suggested that tourists did not match Australia, athletically down to “cultural differences”, saying that his opponents had benefited from an external lifestyle.

The players also stressed that England were not far from this all-karna Australia, but the results told a different story and Edwards would not only need to produce results, but also win public support.

Seemar Kate Cross has stated that Ashes Tursing probably lost fans of England, and the reconstruction process will start with that T20 series at West Indies’ house from May 21, live on Sky sports.

Edwards has a lineage to change the fate of England and a major summer against the West Indies and India will be a beginning, although the acid test will later come to the subcontinent in the World Cup.

England have hired a winner, now the team must become the winner again – and in fact one should test an juggling of an Australia side.

He has not won the World Cup (50-over or T20) since 2017 and his last ash Triumph in 2014 has returned.
