Liverpool's Darwin Nunez was involved in a brawl with fans after Uruguay's defeat to Colombia in the Copa America semi-final.

Uruguay's players, including Nunez, went into the stands at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte when violence reportedly broke out in the players' family section.

Footage showed Nunez climbing over the railing, and Colombia fans confronted him while other fans attempted to stop him.

Uruguay's players said they came into the stands to protect their families.

Luis Suarez said: “Obviously if someone is attacking your family you want to go and defend them, but the image it creates is not fair.

“We had to protect our families who were there. What I could see there was that a lot of my teammates' family members, kids, were trapped and things were falling on them and you felt helpless.”

Uruguay defender Jose Gimenez explains Fox Soccer“They attacked all our families, a section of Colombia fans. It's a disaster. Our family is in danger.”

CONMEBOL issued a statement after the game saying it strongly condemns any act of violence that impacts the game.

“Our work is based on the belief that football connects and unites us through its positive values,” the statement said.

“There is no place for intolerance and violence on and off the field. We invite everyone to spend the remaining days cheering on their national teams and enjoying an unforgettable party.”

Colombia won the match 1–0 thanks to Jefferson Lerma's first-half winning goal, although they had to play the entire second half with 10 men after Dani Muñoz was shown a red card in first-half injury time.

They will face Argentina in the final on Monday.
