Clayton Kershaw, the Los Angeles Dodgers’ top left-hander, was placed on the 15-day injured list Saturday, a day after he left a game in the second inning because of soreness in his left big toe.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said Kershaw has a bone problem in his toe.

“There’s so much swelling he can’t even walk with it,” Roberts told reporters before Saturday’s game against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Kershaw, 36, struck out after giving up a thunderous homer to Corbin Carroll on the second pitch of the second inning. The pitch — a curveball — was clocked at just 67 mph.

“No matter what I did, I couldn’t find a way to keep myself comfortable on my toes going forward,” Kershaw said after the contest. “It’s very frustrating. Obviously, I put the team in a very difficult position, the bullpen had to cover eight innings.”

Los Angeles won the game 10–9. Kershaw allowed three runs, three hits, and one walk, while recording three outs.

A three-time National League Cy Young Award winner and the 2014 NL MVP, Kershaw is 2-2 with a 4.50 ERA in seven starts this season. He made his season debut on July 25 after offseason shoulder surgery

The Dodgers also placed right-hander Joe Kelly (right shoulder inflammation) on the 15-day injured list and promoted right-handers Brent Honeywell and Ben Casperius from Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Kelly allowed two runs and three hits in 1 2/3 innings on Friday. The 36-year-old is 1-1 with a 5.20 ERA in 31 games this season.

Honeywell, 29, was 0-1 with a 2.21 ERA in 10 games (one start) with Los Angeles earlier this season. He pitched four scoreless innings in two games at Oklahoma City on Aug. 22 and 27.

Honeywell was selected off waivers by the Dodgers on July 13 after being let go by the Pittsburgh Pirates. He went 1–3 with a 4.85 ERA in 31 appearances at Double-A Indianapolis and had a 2.70 ERA in two major league relief appearances for Pittsburgh.

Casperius, 25, was briefly with Los Angeles earlier this month but didn’t play in a game. He had a 4-3 record and a 3.30 ERA in 14 games (13 starts) in Oklahoma City.
