Manny Machado's two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning gave the San Diego Padres a 10-8 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Friday night.
Arizona overcame a 7-2 deficit in the ninth. Alec Thomas hit a grand slam with one out off closer Robert Suarez to bring the score to within one run. After Corbin Carroll doubled with two outs, pinch-hitter Randal Grichuk hit a two-run homer to give the team a one-run lead.
But Diamondbacks closer Paul Sewald (0-2) couldn't get a single out in the bottom of the inning. Jurickson Profar started things off with a game-tying homer, his 13th of the year. After Jake Cronenworth walked, Machado laced his 12th homer into the left-center-field bleachers.
Stephen Kolek (3-0) got the final out of the top of the ninth to earn the win, giving San Diego its 12th victory in 15 games in front of a Petco Park-record crowd of 47,171.
San Diego took a four-run lead in the fourth inning. Jackson Merrill lined a two-run triple to the right field corner to give them a 3–2 lead, scoring Cronenworth and Machado.
David Peralta followed with an RBI double down the right field line that Merrill capitalized on, then scored when Kyle Higashioka laced a two-out single to left.
Higashioka made the score 7–2 in the sixth when he hit a two-run homer to left-center off reliever Joe Jakes.
Merrill scored the Padres' first run on a groundout in the second, plated the ball to Machado, who followed with a double and moved to third on Donovan Solano's infield out.
Arizona started the game by scoring runs three batters in. Carroll started with a double and followed with a home run after one out when Joc Pederson hit a two-run homer to center, his 13th homer of the season.
No starters were involved in this decision. Slade Cecconi pitched 4 2/3 innings for the Diamondbacks, giving up eight hits and five runs with one walk and two strikeouts.
