Construction on the second section of Vishal Deerfoot Trail Improvement Project Now complete in Calgary.
Provincial Transportation Minister Devin Dreshan announced Friday that construction on Beddington Trail and 11 Street NW, the project’s second major section, which began in the spring of 2023, has been completed at a cost of $19 million.
Work included connecting 11th Street NE to westbound Beddington Trail and northbound Deerfoot Trail, and adding a fourth lane in each direction of Deerfoot between Airport Trail and Beddington Trail.
The Alberta government says construction on phase two of the Deerfoot Improvement Project is now complete. The project included adding a new lane in each direction between Airport Trail and Beddington Trail.

The new elevated section will open to traffic on Saturday, October 26, 2024.

André Chabot, Ward 10 councilor for the City of Calgary, says the reforms will “increase efficiency and safety in the movement of goods and people.”
Chris Dinsdale, President and CEO of the Calgary Airport Authority, says they should provide better access to Calgary International Airport by “reducing traffic congestion, providing alternative routes, increasing connectivity, and increasing economic and logistics efficiency.”
The Alberta government says when the entire Deerfoot Improvement Project is completed, Calgarians can expect morning commutes to be 15 per cent faster and evening commutes 22 per cent faster.

- New ramps and northbound lanes between McKnight Boulevard and 64 Avenue NE. Work began in autumn 2022 and was completed in summer 2023;
- New interchange at Beddington Trail NW and 11th NW, completed October 20, 2024;
- Reconstruction of the interchange at McKnight Boulevard, which began in spring 2023 and is expected to be completed in fall 2025;
- New lanes and reconstruction of ramp between 16th Ave. NE and 32nd Ave. NE, scheduled for completion in late 2025;
- New northbound bridge and ramp on Glenmore Trail SE, scheduled to be completed in 2026;
- New interchange at Southland Drive SE, expected to be completed in 2026;
- Completion of new ramps and interchanges at Bow Bottom Trail and Anderson Road SE is scheduled for 2027;
- the addition of the Ivor Strong Bridge, with completion expected in the fall of 2027;
The Government of Alberta estimates that when the entire project is completed, motorists can expect 15 per cent faster morning commutes, 22 per cent faster evening commutes and a savings of 900,000 hours annually on the Deerfoot Trail.
