Another Manitoba-based team was upset Thursday night at the third annual PointsBet Invitational.

The two-time defending champions were eliminated after losing a draw to Button in their first game of the Reed Carruthers Single-Knockout Bonspiel.

The sixth-seeded Carruthers foursome were defeated by 11th-seeded Felix Asselin 5–4 in a sweep of the round of 16.

With the game tied, Carruthers gave up two points in the ninth end and came home in the 10th end to fall behind by a pair. After Asselin missed a double-takeout for the win in the final end, Carruthers hit a raise-takeout to score deuce and tie it after 10 ends of the game.

They do not play extra ends in this event as the winner is decided by a draw on the button. Carruthers went first and slid past the button in four feet. Asselin landed his throw right on the button to end Carruthers’ hopes of winning a third consecutive PointsBet title.

Fourth seed Matt Dunstone was eliminated after losing his opening game on Wednesday. And in the women’s draw, third seed and four-time national champion Kerry Einarson lost to 14th seed Alison McNutt on Thursday.

“It’s definitely tough,” Einarson said. “He played really well. They took many brilliant draws and we missed many chances.

“We cannot take anything away from them. “They played really well and we didn’t.”

Four Manitoba rinks qualified for the quarter-finals or Elite 8. Jordan MacDonald is the final Manitoba team in the men’s draw and the 13th seed faces Kevin Coe on Friday.

Fourth seed Caitlin Laws will face fifth seed Selena Sturme. Second-seeded Chelsea Carey, along with old teammate Jennifer Jones, face off against 10th-seeded Kayla Scurlick. And sixth seed Kate Cameron will face McNutt for a place in the last four.
