The Brussels, Belgium native, 77, shared with ET her tips for achieving the perfect look while celebrating the inauguration. Diane von Furstenberg: the woman before the fashion exhibition At the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles, California.
“I have always referred to the motto La Petite Valise when designing my collections and organizing my own wardrobe. The French phrase, which translates to little suitcase, symbolizes dressing for ease and practicality; two Factors that I have always found to be essential when creating the perfect outfit are, if you know how to pack, you know how to live,” she explained.
“The foundation of a woman’s wardrobe should be practical staple pieces that never go out of style. Once you have the classics, you can add statement pieces through bold colors, fabrics and silhouettes to coincide with each season. “It’s a simple way to add a little something extra to any everyday look,” she adds.
An absolute must have? The designer’s favorite wrap dress, worn by A-listers too cindy crawford, mother of jesus, zoe saldana, kate hudson, Paris Hilton, sarah jessica parker, kendall jenner and more.
“Although the designs and silhouettes have changed over the years to keep pace with the changing trends, the core values of the DVF brand have always remained the same. “We have retained our iconic designs, such as the wrap dress, but found ways to elevate the styles to stay current,” the philanthropist said.
Von Furstenberg is also influenced by the wearers of his brands when creating products.
“The exhibition’s title Women Before Fashion explains it all. … DVF’s pieces are first and foremost designed based on what women wear and live in. … I constantly find myself looking at the incredible women around me. I find inspiration from, which I then incorporate into my designs,” she said.
“With each design decision I make, whether it’s fabric, color or silhouette, I hope to create iconic looks that inspire women to feel confident and free. … My designs are always about freedom. Which can be seen in full display. Woman before fashion exhibition.”
