SM Krishna, whose full name was Somanahalli Malaiya Krishna, was born on May 1, 1932 in the village of Somanahalli in Mandya district. He received his early education in Mysore. He studied law from Government Law College, Bengaluru. He was also a Fulbright Scholar. Krishna started his political career as an MLA from Mandya. In 1962 he won as an independent candidate. Long political career
Krishna held many important positions in his long political career. He has also been a Member of Lok Sabha, Member of Rajya Sabha, Speaker of Karnataka Assembly, Deputy Chief Minister of Karnataka and MLC. He studied at Maharaja’s College, Mysore, Government Law College, Bengaluru, Southern Methodist University, Dallas Texas, USA. As a Fulbright Scholar, he also studied at George Washington University, Washington DC, USA. Before joining politics, he was also Professor of International Law at Sri Jagadguru Renukacharya Law College, Bengaluru.
Krishna was a member of the Third Karnataka Legislative Assembly from 1962 to 1967. In 1965, he participated in the Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference held in New Zealand as a member of the Indian Parliamentary delegation. He was a member of the Fourth Lok Sabha from 1968 to 1970 and a member of the Fifth Lok Sabha from 1971 to 1972. From 1972 to 1977, he was a member of the Karnataka Legislative Council. During this time he also served as Minister of Commerce, Industry and Parliamentary Affairs in the Government of Karnataka. In 1982, he was a member of the Indian delegation to the United Nations. He was Union Minister of State for Industries in 1983-84 and Union Minister of State for Finance in 1984-85.
First Chief Minister then Foreign Minister
He was a member of the 9th Karnataka Legislative Assembly from 1989 to 1994 and Speaker of the Assembly from 1989 to 1992. In March 1990 he attended the Commonwealth Parliamentary Seminar in Westminster, UK. From 1992 to 1994, he was the Deputy Chief Minister of Karnataka. He was a member of the Rajya Sabha from April 1996 to October 1999. He was the Chief Minister of Karnataka from 11 October 1999 to 20 May 2004. He then became the Foreign Minister in the Union Cabinet. He was also the Governor of Maharashtra from 2004 to 2008.
Krishna was also associated with the World University Service. He loved to play tennis. He also loved designing menswear and reading. His death is a great loss for the country.
