Hideki Matsuyama carded a six-under 64 to pull ahead of a crowded field at the FedEx St. Jude Championship and take a five-stroke lead heading into the final round.
Denny McCarthy, who was tied for the lead at halftime with Matsuyama, added four bogeys to his round before recording his first birdie and is now tied for sixth, eight shots behind.
Sam Burns made only five pars in his round of 70 – and his driver was broken – to also fall behind, while world number one Scottie Scheffler also fell off the pace in his round of 69.
The top 50 players in the field will advance to the BMW Championship next week and will have the opportunity to compete in all of the prestigious $20 million tournaments next year.
Viktor Hovland took a big step in that direction with a third-round 66 to move into third place, six shots behind Matsuyama.
However, Jordan Spieth’s season effectively ended when he made two double-bogeys in a round of 74, dropping him to a tie for 69th among 70-men.
Will Zalatoris came into the postseason tied for 49th and shot 67 on Saturday to move into a tie for sixth with McCarthy. He is now almost certain to remain in the top 50.
Justin Rose and Adam Scott are among the players advancing to Sunday’s final round. Rose, who is currently tied for ninth at TPC Southwind in Memphis, is tied for 55th in the FedEx Cup, while Scott – who is tied for 25th – is tied for 46th.
