Monkeypox virus has been declared a public health emergency by the World Health Organization. Cases of monkeypox virus have been reported in most countries of the world. India has also issued an alert regarding this virus. Monkey pox virus is not an airborne disease. The disease is spread through contact with an infected person, skin-to-skin contact, sexual intercourse with an infected person, touching their clothes and bed sharing.
Currently, no cure has been discovered for the monkeypox virus. However, there are many antiviral drugs that are used to prevent diseases such as smallpox, and these drugs are also being given to patients with the MPOX virus. These antiviral drugs include tecovirimat or ST-246, brincidofovir, and cidofovir.
Additionally, intravenous vaccinia immune globulin (VIGIV), which is licensed for the treatment of smallpox, may be approved for use in the treatment of mumps and other poxviruses.
NIAID has conducted 2 clinical trials of the drug tacovarimate for the treatment of poxvirus. In September 2022, NIAID, in collaboration with ACTG (Advancing Clinical Treatment for HIV/AIDS and Other Infections Globally), conducted clinical trials of the tacovarimate vaccine in the United States. More than 500 adults and children infected with the Mpox virus were included in the trial. All infected subjects included in this trial were given tacovarimate. While other participants were given placebo pills. Researchers are now collecting data to see if participants who took tacovarimate recovered faster than participants who took a placebo.
Tacavir mat- In 2018, the Food and Drug Administration approved tecovirimat for the treatment of smallpox. This medicine can be taken both orally and by injection.
brincidofovir- NIAID also supported brincidofovir for the treatment of smallpox. The drug was also approved for the treatment of smallpox in adults and children.
