Ian McKellen It is said that the tragic fall which landed him from a London theatre into a hospital bed could have been much worse… if it wasn’t for his fat suit!!!
The veteran actor, speaking about the horrific incident for the first time, told Saga magazine that he suffered a broken wrist and spinal cord injury in the June incident… but his ribs were saved thanks to his costume.
As we reported … Ian was playing John Falstaff in the West End production of “Player Kings” when he fell off the stage He got hurt during a fight scene and had to be rushed to the hospital.
Ian says he used a fat suit to play Falstaff and the extra cushioning softened his landing when he fell… saving his ribs and other joints in the process.
The 85-year-old said his neck and wrist have still not healed, and he doesn’t leave the house these days because he’s afraid “someone might bump into him.”
Ian said that he got his leg stuck in a chair on stage and when he tried to free it he kept sliding on other things and eventually landed on someone’s lap in the front row!!!
IM also said that the incident of falling has come to his mind countless times… and he feels ashamed about the whole incident.
