New Delhi: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Tuesday said India has not closed its doors to trade with China but the issue is to determine in which areas the country will engage with Beijing and on what terms.
Relations between the two nuclear-armed Asian giants have been tense since the deadly clash in Galwan in 2020.
After this, India tightened scrutiny of investments coming from Chinese companies and put a stop on major projects.
However, government officials, including Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, have recently supported the suggestion of allowing more Chinese investments in the country.
India can either integrate into China’s supply chain or promote foreign direct investment (FDI) from China to boost its global exports, according to the latest annual economic survey released in July.
“We have not stopped trading with China… I think the issue is what areas do you trade in and on what terms do you trade? This is much more complex than a black and white binary answer,” Jaishankar said during a conference in Berlin.
India may ease restrictions on Chinese investment in non-sensitive sectors such as solar panel and battery manufacturing, where it lacks expertise and which hamper domestic manufacturing, according to news agency Reuters.
India has banned visas for all Chinese nationals from 2020, as well as stopped investment scrutiny, but is considering making it easier for Chinese technicians after it disrupted billions of dollars of investment.
