Amid ongoing tensions between Israel and Hezbollah, the Israeli military carried out airstrikes on Hezbollah positions in the southern suburbs of Beirut for a third day on Thursday. In these early morning blasts, huge clouds of smoke were seen rising in the sky of Beirut, due to which the atmosphere of fear and insecurity has spread among the people. According to the National News Agency (NNA), Lebanon’s official news agency, these attacks not only affected Beirut

They also reached Bint Jabal in South Lebanon. Many buildings and residential complexes have been heavily damaged due to overnight airstrikes and artillery shelling. Additionally, at least five people were killed in attacks on the towns of Bazuria and Jumeirah.

Israeli action against Hezbollah
Since late September, Israel has launched a major air and ground campaign against Iran-backed Hezbollah. The campaign is aimed at undermining the base and influence of Hezbollah, which has been embroiled in years of conflict along the border. The campaign is running parallel to the Gaza war, adding to instability and tension on both sides.

The number of dead and injured is constantly increasing.
Areas affected by the attacks in Beirut’s suburbs have already been evacuated, prompting local authorities to not release official figures on casualties from Thursday’s attacks. However, Lebanon’s Ministry of Health has reported that 3,365 people have lost their lives and 14,344 have been injured across Lebanon in Israeli attacks since October 7. These figures highlight the gravity of the humanitarian crisis.

Efforts to negotiate a ceasefire are ongoing.
Ali Hassan Khalil, a political aide to Lebanese parliament speaker Nabiah Bari, said on Wednesday that a preliminary ceasefire agreement had been reached with US envoy Amos Hochstein. In an interview with Al Jazeera, Khalil said that the proposal was sent to the Israeli side by Hochstein, but there has been no response from Israel yet.

He also said that any possible agreement should be based on UN Resolution 1701, which was adopted in 2006. The proposal aims to help the Lebanese army maintain peace along the Israeli border in southern Lebanon and ensure that only Lebanese state forces remain there.

Khalil also indicated that Lebanon has no objection to the participation of the United States or France in monitoring the ceasefire. He said that this international support will not only help in establishing peace but can also help in maintaining stability in the region.
