Jerry Jones bought himself the job of general manager, a role he continues to protect and defend as if the owner and chief decision-maker in Dallas warrants some level of admiration.
Have been defending myself in incredible tones since the start of training camp Cowboy’s alleged all-embracing approach By the season, Jones leads the way in taking credit and runs and hides when the accountability train comes calling.
Jones can’t buy a winner.
They get to see the NFC playoffs featuring two East Division rivals in the conference semifinals, both thanks to key decision-makers’ running personnel and caring enough about the end result to be high-energy enough to produce a winner. Collaborates with head coaches.
Philadelphia looks like a team that is ready to return to the top of the mountain after a hard reset just a year ago. The Eagles lost in the playoff opener at Tampa Bay and the energy around the group had the perfect possibility of a crash landing for Nick Sirianni. The negotiations with ownership to step into my office ended with Sirianni offering a public MEA, eliminating play-calling on offense, and making changes at both coordinator positions. It appears both decisions are grading out as A-plus, in no small part due to the addition of general manager Howie Roseman to the roster.
This includes the 2,000-yard rusher who had another impressive game in the first-round win over Green Bay. Saquon Barkley was also available for the Dallas Cowboys. But that might not fit the description of all-in.
The Commanders upset the Bucs on Sunday night, 23-20, and are headed to Detroit behind rookie QB Jayden Daniels. Kliff Kingsbury has been a perfect match as offensive coordinator, and a second chance as head coach in Washington couldn’t look much better for former Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn. He’s doing it with a group of former Dallas players that Jones couldn’t stand.
It’s not just Eastern rivals who are bowing out this week. As the Ravens plowed through Pittsburgh with another running back, the Cowboys thought they were ready to be snared by Father Time. Derrick Henry was deemed too expensive by Jones, a man who understands you get what you pay for. The Cowboys released running back Ezekiel Elliott before the season ended to strengthen their RB rotation.
And the clock keeps ticking on Jones in Dallas.
As the Eagles and Commanders advance into the playoffs, the Cowboys are still working out contract concepts with Mike McCarthy.
But that decision isn’t the one that matters most to the Cowboys. His direction depends on Jones realizing he is not the best person for the GM position.
If and until that happens for the Cowboy, he means nothing more than a man and a mirror.
