Chelsea made their winning start to the Women’s Super League regular season as Sonia Bompastor’s side beat Liverpool with a 3–0 win at St Helens.
The Blues’ sixth consecutive win takes them top of Manchester City, who have played a game more this season. By overcoming Liverpool, Chelsea became the sixth team in the history of the competition to win their first six matches.
Liverpool were the last team to beat Chelsea in any competition in the same match last season. The 4-3 defeat in May marked the last time Chelsea had tasted defeat in any form and it emboldened Liverpool, who started quickly. However, Chelsea tempered Liverpool’s early enthusiasm, forcing Reds keeper Rachel Laws into some great saves.
Chelsea had to wait 37 minutes to find the breakthrough, but one soon turned into two as the Blues scored twice in five minutes. Mayra Ramírez opened the scoring first, as Lawes, who was given credit for his important early stops, played a loose pass towards Guro Reiten, who finished well past the ‘keeper’s over-confidence from distance.
Aggie-Beaver Jones, who was introduced in the second half, scored his fourth of the season late to secure all three points for his team.
