Mumbai: Voting for the 288-member Maharashtra Assembly will take place on Wednesday. In this election, the ruling Mahawati alliance is trying to retain power. While the opposition alliance Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) is hopeful of a grand return to power. Voting for all 288 Maharashtra Assembly seats will begin at 7 am and end at 6 pm. The counting of votes will take place on November 23. During the election campaign, important leaders like Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi and several Union Ministers campaigned for their candidates in the state.

Apart from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the ruling Mahawati alliance also includes the Shiv Sena led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) led by Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar. The coalition hopes to retain power on the back of popular schemes for women like ‘Maji Galki Behan’. During the election campaign, the BJP prominently raised slogans such as bante se kitange and ekak hain se mahsuf hai. Opposition parties alleged that Mahawati was trying to polarize voters on religious lines through these slogans.

What was special in the election campaign?
The Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), comprising constituencies of the Congress, Shiv Shiv Sena (UBT) and NCP (Sharad Chandra Pawar), has contested Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s Bante from Katanga and Prime Minister Modi’s ‘ Criticized the slogan ‘Ek Hai Se Safe’. Not all BJP allies supported these slogans. Ajit Pawar distanced himself from them. Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis tried to clarify the meaning of the slogans, which created confusion in the ruling coalition. The MVA coalition countered the ruling coalition’s propaganda by focusing on issues such as caste-based enumeration, social justice and protection of the constitution. The opposition aimed to appeal to voters who were being ignored by the government.

What is the calculation of seats in Mahayoti?
Ahead of voting, the BJP launched a new campaign on Monday. He attacked the opposition MVA and urged voters to say no to the Congress. Various past events are mentioned in the advertisement campaign. These include incidents like the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack and the killing of sadhus in Palghar. The BJP, which is part of the ruling MVA, is contesting 149 seats in the November 20 polls, while the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena has fielded candidates in 81 seats. Ajit Pawar-led NCP is contesting on 59 seats.

How many candidates of which party in MVA?
Congress, which is part of MVA, is contesting 101 seats, Shiv Sena (UBT) 95 and NCP (Sharad Chandra Pawar) 86 seats. Smaller parties including the Bahujan Samaj Party and the All India Majlis Ittehad Muslimeen (AIMIM) are also contesting the elections. BSP has fielded 237 candidates and AIMIM has fielded 17 candidates. Compared to the previous assembly elections (2019), the number of candidates this time has increased by 28%. This year, 4,136 candidates are contesting the election, while in 2019, 3,239 candidates were in the fray. 2,086 of these candidates are independent candidates. Rebel candidates are in the fray in more than 150 seats, with Mahawati and MVA candidates fighting against their party’s official candidates.

How many total votes in the state?The number of registered voters till October 30 is 9,70,25,119, officials said. These include 5,00,22,739 male voters, 4,69,96,279 female voters and 6,101 transgender voters. Further, the total number of disabled voters is 6,41,425 while the number of serving armed forces voters is 1,16,170. This time Maharashtra will have 1,00,186 polling stations, as against 96,654 in the 2019 assembly elections. This increase is due to the increase in the number of voters. About six lakh state government employees will be deputed for election duty.
