Videos emerged showing some police personnel guarding the place, which contradicted the administration's statement that it had deployed a large contingent to stop the protesters. Later in the afternoon, incidents of houses being attacked were reported in Gazpur. A house was set on fire and several vehicles were damaged. Residents said the absence of police was clearly visible.
Chief Minister Eknath Shinde promised to start the demolition drive from Monday.
Last year, the district administration surveyed the fort and found 160 illegal constructions. The fort is a protected monument.
