A major earthquake with a magnitude of 7.4 struck Chile on Thursday, according to the United States Geological Survey.

According to agency data, the quake struck at 9:50 p.m. Chilean time, about 28 miles southeast of San Pedro de Atacama, Chile.

Seismologists may revise the reported magnitude of an earthquake when reviewing available data. Additional information gathered about an earthquake may also prompt USGS scientists to update the earthquake-intensity map.

Earthquake tremors in the area

An aftershock is usually a smaller earthquake that follows a larger earthquake in the same general area. Aftershocks are usually minor shifts in the part of the fault that slipped during the initial earthquake.

Aftershocks may occur several days, weeks, or even years after the first earthquake. These events may be as intense or even greater than the initial earthquake, and may continue to affect already damaged locations.
