What is the election problem here?
The major problems in Matia Mahal Assembly are the problem of power lines, overcrowding in narrow streets and water. The problem of water is more because the pipelines laid for drinking water in the narrow streets are so old that they have a lot of leakage problem. Digging roads and laying new pipelines is not an easy task for anyone. A net of wires is laid on the electric poles. In winter, these wires do not cause any problem, but in summer, many fire accidents occur due to these wires. The streets are so narrow that even fire engines cannot reach in case of fire. Apart from this, littering is also a major problem in this area.
Who has a role in winning or losing?
Most of the parts of Matia Mahal Assembly Constituency are around the historic Jama Masjid. This area is also the old center of business activities. Therefore, the number of people from the veshya community is also considerable in this area, but the Muslim voters have always played a decisive role. After Salempur Assembly Constituency, Matia Mahal is the second largest Muslim majority Assembly Constituency. Since 1972 till now, candidates from any category other than Muslim candidates have not been able to win from this seat. It is also a shocking fact that since 1972, elections have been held on this seat 10 times and five of them have been won by a candidate of a party that never had support in Delhi.
Shoaib Iqbal has been the candidate of these parties for five times. For the first time after the formation of the assembly in 1993, he contested the election on a Janata Dal ticket and stopped Begum Khurshid’s Karvan Fateh. In 2015, he too could not stand against the Aam Aadmi Party and lost to Asim Ahmed Khan. In the 2020 assembly elections, Aam Aadmi Party canceled the ticket of Asim Ahmed Khan and gave ticket to Shoaib Iqbal and once again won from this seat. Political parties estimate that about 60-61 percent of the total voters here are Muslim voters. The percentage of prostitute voters is about 4-6%. Scheduled caste voters are slightly more than caste voters.
Political mood
Elections were held 10 times from 1972 to 2020, but it could not become the stronghold of any national party. In 1972, the National Congress (O) gave a ticket to Sikandar Bakht, one of the founding leaders of the BJP, and he won. Begum Khursheed Qadwai has won twice from this seat. The first time he won was on a Janata Party ticket and the second time was in 1983 on a BJP ticket. In 1993, when elections were held after the formation of the assembly, Shoaib Iqbal defeated him. From 1993 to 2013, Shoaib Iqbal won from this seat but in 2015, the Aam Aadmi Party defeated him. AAP’s Asim Ahmed Khan defeated him by more than 21 thousand votes. No one has lost this assembly seat by such a margin in its 52-year history. In the 2020 assembly, AAP canceled the ticket of Asim Ahmed Khan and gave the ticket to Shoaib. Once again he won.
