2025 Detona 500 Sunday is scheduled to be held on Sunday, 16 February, with a unique qualifying format, which determines that the drivers make it in the initial lineup for the mega event. This year, a total of 45 drivers entered for 41 spots; Many notable drivers failed to qualify for the “Great American race”.
The qualifying process is highly competitive, especially for “open” cars, which is challenging for them to secure a place in the race of 500 miles. After the completion of Thursday’s couple qualifying, JJ Yale, Chandler Smith, Anthony Alfredo, and BJ McLeod are four drivers who did not qualify for this year’s Detona 500 fields.
Since only two places were abandoned to secure the couple in qualifying, Justin Ongier and Corey Lajoi were two highest finishers among the unchanged teams in their respective duel war race and closed their place in the prestigious NASCAR season opener. This excluded Yale, Smith, Alfredo and McLeod from the early grid.
36 chartered drivers were already confirmed in the 41-driver area for Detona 500. Nine open teams were competing for five spots. Among them, Martin Truex Junior and Jimmy Johnson closed their spots through Wednesday’s single-car qualifying.
The four -time Indie 500 winner Helio Castronweus already had a guaranteed location through NASCAR’s open discounts provisional (OEP) rule, which ensures their entry into the race regardless of performance of merit. The remaining two were protected by Lajoi and Ongier.
