Whether your attention turns to the dog with the cute name — in this case, a handful of tiny wire-haired dachshunds — or the famous hot dog, there’s plenty to celebrate on National Hot Dog Day in Calgary.
Richard Nesbitt says he's not disputing the Rich Dogs mobile catering cart.
“I’ve had a love affair with dogs ever since I can remember.”
But then Nesbitt joked, “Everything is local here. (The hot dogs) are made in Canmore.
The essential email for the day's top news stories from Canada and around the world.
“It’s all about quality: homemade ketchup, homemade flavor, homemade everything.”
Maggie Wladarsky got her first try at Rich Dogs in Inglewood.
“It looks like a great hot dog, and it smells like a great hot dog. Oh yeah. A+ dog.”
Lorraine Bresser has been breeding her dachshund dogs for 25 years and says they are very special, too.
“Yes, I love dachshunds.”
“I like this breed because it can run backwards just as fast as it can forwards,” Bresser said.
The dachshund is a German breed known as the wiener dog. German immigrants who arrived in Coney Island, New York in the 1870s created wieners in honor of the dog, which soon became known as hot dogs.
And now we're back on full cylinder. Happy National Hot Dog Day, Calgary.
