MANILA, Philippines—The College of Saint Benilde ushered in a new era in the NCAA Season 100 men’s basketball tournament on Saturday.
And after a 78-65 win over last season’s finalists Mapua, led by their new players under Alan Liwag, it’s safe to say the Blazers have a bright future.

Liwag filled the void left by Season 98 MVP Will Gojum well, leading Benilde with 23 points and 18 rebounds.

“Coach (Charles Tiu) always tells me to be a leader for the team. Maybe I felt my game today showed because of the trust my coach and teammates put in me. I really enjoyed playing today,” Liwag said in Filipino.
“We all enjoyed the game and we were able to showcase our game.”

Replacing Gojum will not be an easy task for Liwag, who admitted feeling “pressure” as Benilde has a new replacement after Gojum’s departure.

“There is pressure because Will Gozzam is different, but I am not thinking too much about it. I will focus on one game at a time,” he said.
Luckily, Liwag won’t have to work too hard as he has plenty of support from newcomers like Gabe Cometa and Tony Yannott.
Former San Beda guard Cometa scored 17 points, while another former Red Lion Yanot put up an all-round performance with nine points, five rebounds, eight assists and four steals.
