Constitution Hill is performing well in his comeback bid and looks increasingly likely to return in the Ladbrokes Christmas Hurdle on Boxing Day.

Nicky Henderson’s stable star has battled various ailments since winning the race last season, missing the Cheltenham Festival due to an infection and then suffering from colic.

His first start of the year was further delayed after being found lame before the Fighting Fifth Hurdle at Newcastle, but the injury proved largely innocuous and Henderson still hoped to make it to Kempton Park.

Those hopes are very likely to be realised, and the trainer is not ruling out switching Sir Gino over fences at the same meeting that saw the four-year-old land Fighting Fifth in the absence of his stablemate.

“Everything is going well,” said Henderson, of Constitution Hill.

“I can tell you how many days there are still to go (until the Christmas barrier) and I think we’ve got every chance of being there. I’ve never looked better than him – he looks fantastic.

“He’s got some work to do, I think we’ll get there.

“There’s still the possibility that Sir Gino could come over the fence at Kempton. He’s got to go somewhere. It’s all up in the air, so let’s see how we go.

“I wouldn’t say we won’t (both run in the Christmas Hurdle), no, it’s possible we will.

“I’m still attracted to fences with Sir Gino, because he’s a very good jumper. We haven’t trained him over fences since Fighting Fifth, we’re thinking about it.”
