New Delhi: The Western Australian all-rounder decided to retire midway through the Sheffield Shield match against Tasmania. During the match, he came to know that another child was born at his house. Cartwright, who was playing on 52, got the news suddenly at teatime the next day, after which he rushed to the hospital with his wife. Cartwright’s wife Tameka was 37 weeks pregnant and started having some problems. Due to which the doctor advised to deliver the baby on the same day.

The information was given in advance

The 31-year-old right-hander had already informed the Tasmanian team and match officials of the situation, so that his departure would not disrupt the game. Explaining his plan, he said, ‘Tasmania was informed of the situation during the innings break. There was a conversation between myself, coach and captain Sam Whitman. We had already planned since then. When I needed to leave the field at the tea break, hoping to return to the crease after the innings.”

Came out to bat in the same innings

After tending to his wife and newborn child, Cartwright hurried back to the WACA ground in Perth on the third day of the match. After teammate Cooper Connolly was out, Cartwright came to the crease to bat once again. However, they could not last long. Facing Tasmania’s Riley Meredith, Cartwright was eventually dismissed for a respectable score of 65. That capped off a dramatic day on and off the field. Cartwright’s innings was crucial to Western Australia’s 332 in the first innings. The team eventually won the match by six wickets, with Cartwright unbeaten on 39 in pursuit of 83.
