Ireland’s Kelly Harrington won gold in the women’s 60kg event at the Paris Olympics, but Team GB boxer Lewis Richardson missed out on a place in the men’s 71kg final after losing to Mexico’s Marco Verde.
Harrington was crowned a dual Olympic champion after defeating Wenlu Yang in the women’s 60kg final at Roland Garros.
After a cautious start, Yang began landing more punches and appeared to be in control, but Harrington regained his composure and landed several body blows before the bell.
The Chinese boxer landed a powerful punch to the nose in the second round, but Harrington continued to do damage with some hard body strikes.
The Irishman landed some powerful strikes in the final frame to give Ireland their fourth gold medal of the Games.
Earlier in the night, Richardson had to settle for a bronze medal after losing a split decision to Verde.
The Briton started off well, landing hard punches to Verde’s face, but the Mexican came back in the round and landed a series of combinations to break through the Briton’s defense.
The Colchester fighter showed his skill in the second round, landing a powerful uppercut and two hard blows to Verde’s head to win the round.
The close contest headed into the third round, and Richardson began to use his reach more, landing hard blows to Verde’s nose.
The Mexican jabbed at the Briton’s cheek but struggled to land some hard punches before Richardson jabbed him in the face again.
However, all five judges saw it differently and awarded the round to the Mexican, which meant Richardson’s dream of reaching the Olympic final was over.
The bronze medal means Richardson is the only British boxer to win a medal at Paris 2024.
He was already assured of a bronze medal after his win against Zeyad Eishaash in the quarter-finals on Saturday and it was a bittersweet feeling to miss out on the chance to win the gold.
He said: “It’s very raw and hard to comprehend right now.
“I won the bronze medal but it’s hard to celebrate it fully because you’re moving on to the next medal and want to change the colour of that medal.
“I’m sure that whenever the time is right, I will make a conscious effort – and hopefully soon – to flip that switch and be proud of what I’ve achieved.
“Because right or wrong, I am the only British boxer to win a medal at these Games and I hope I have done the country proud.”
Verde will now face Asadkhuja Muydinkhujayev of Uzbekistan for the gold medal this weekend.
