A new documentary on Phil Collins discusses his health
We’ve heard more than once about Phil Collins retiring from music. But retirement in March 2022 appears to be the real deal.
On Wednesday, December 18, the incomparable musician Phil Collins: Drummer First The documentary debuted on YouTube.
“It’s still sinking in somewhat…” the 73-year-old drummer admitted in an interview, which took place almost a year ago. “I’ve spent my whole life playing drums. Suddenly not being able to do that is a shock.”
When Collins was only five years old, he picked up his first set of drumsticks. However, his 50-year career has “taken a toll on my hands, my legs.”
On retiring, he commented: “If I couldn’t do what I did and do as well as I did, I would prefer to rest and do nothing.” Many perfectionists can probably relate.
He admitted, “If I woke up one day and could grab a pair of drumsticks I’d have a crack at it.” “But I feel like I’ve used up my air miles.”

The documentary also included Nick Collins, his 23-year-old son and fellow drummer. He said that, when his father rose to fame, “musicians, band people in general, thought they were invincible.”
He expressed: “I think it’s really with my dad – there’s just this feeling of ‘You’re a drummer, you’re invincible, you do what you do.’ But you don’t know that it is going to cause huge losses in the long run.
Nick admitted that his father had major surgery on his neck [in 2015] It stemmed from all those years of drumming and poor posture.
Additionally, the elderly Collins suffers from drop foot. Drop foot makes it especially difficult to lift the front part of one’s foot (causing it to drop). Not only does this interfere with drumming, but Collins has to use a stick to walk.
In the autumn of 2021, Collins admitted: “I’m a little bit physically handicapped, which is very frustrating because, you know, I would love to be out there playing with my son.”
He lamented: “I can barely hold the stick with this hand, so there are some physical things that get in the way.”
Nevertheless, he rejected the idea of a reunion tour.
Since then, Collins has freely admitted that the idea of going on the road again feels intimidating – even if he is able to play drums as well as before.
