Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Sri Lanka on Friday for a three -day visit. During this visit, many important agreements, including defense, energy, digital infrastructure, health and trade, are expected to be signed between India and Sri Lanka. This is Prime Minister Modi’s first visit to Sri Lanka, since the power of the left national people (NPP), President Anura Kumara Dasanak has come to power.
Prime Minister Modi last visited Sri Lanka in 2019 and will be the fourth visit to the island since 2015. In particular, Prime Minister Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara will be the first foreign leader to host Dasaniaka who will be after taking office last September.

Prime Minister Modi’s visit is taking place in Thailand after attending the Bimstick Summit. This is also the first visit to a foreign leader since Sri Lanka changed power. In December 2024, President Dasanayak visited India as his first foreign journey, where the two countries issued a joint statement and agreed to increase cooperation in priority areas.
Prior to the visit, both Prime Minister Modi and President Dasanayak both expressed their desire to strengthen India-Sri Lanka relations and increase cooperation in new sectors in their message on social media platforms.
Signing eight contracts
During this visit, eight agreements (MUS) between the two countries are likely to be signed. According to Indian officials, these agreements will promote cooperation in digitalization, health, defense and energy sectors. It is expected that Sri Lanka will sign a new system for especially cheap energy.

Guard of Honor in Freedom Square
On Saturday, Prime Minister Modi will receive the Guard of Honor in Colombo’s Independence Square. Subsequently, formal talks with President Dasanaik will be held in the President’s Secretariat. Identifying the importance of the visit, Indian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka Santosh Jha told News Agency PTI that India-Sri Lanka’s relations are at the strongest level so far. He said that Prime Minister Modi’s visit will take more joint statement issued in December 2024 and will establish new dimensions of bilateral cooperation.
Jha indicated that there could be a defense cooperation agreement during the visit. The agreement will provide regular arrangements such as joint military exercises, training programs and military equipment.
The basic priority would be marine security
The Indian High Commissioner also said that maritime security will be an important pillar of Sri Lankan defense partnership. “Marine security is an important issue, and it has been well accepted that we are in the same area and our security is connected,” he said. On this basis, we are moving forward. Prime Minister Modi’s visit was made during his visit to President Dasanaik during his visit to India and new aspects were added to bilateral relations.
India and Sri Lanka are the nearest neighbors, especially the maritime neighbor. Our relationship is historically, geographically and culturally deep. The bilateral relations between us are also very strong. “There is an understanding between the two countries that our future is common,” he added.
