Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi came under fire for associating 'Abhay Mudra' with Guru Nanak Dev. The Shiromani Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC) on Friday took strict notice of a Congress leader's recent comments in Parliament. In addition, he was also accused of associating Abhay Mudra with the teachings of Guru Nanak Dev. SGPC said in a statement, 'Rahul Gandhi, referring to Guru Nanak, said that Guru Sahib's picture shows Abhya Mudra, which is completely wrong. The proposal made it clear that Guru Sahib did not approve of any such currency or currencies. He taught to connect with only one 'Akalpurkha'.
The SGPC strongly objected to Rahul Gandhi's comments in Parliament about the philosophy and image of Guru Nanak Dev. The committee said that Holy Gurbani and the teachings of the Gurus should not form part of political debate without full information. Often the fundamental tenets of the Gurus and the meaning of holy gurbani are also misinterpreted by politicians, thereby hurting the sentiments of Sikhs. Through the resolution, the SGPC appealed to the Speaker of the Lok Sabha and the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha to ensure that no one's religious sentiments are hurt during the proceedings of the Parliament.
What did Rahul Gandhi say in Parliament?
Rahul Gandhi had quoted the Prophet of Islam during the debate on the motion of thanks in the President's address on July 1. He said that the Quran talks about fearlessness. He said that when the hands are raised in 'prayer', 'Abhay Mudra' can also be seen in a way. Holding pictures of Lord Shiva, Guru Nanak and Jesus Christ, he cited Hinduism, Islam, Sikhism, Christianity, Buddhism and Jainism to highlight the importance of fearlessness.
Ban on videography for publicity in the Golden Temple complex
The SGPC also ordered to stop any artist or actor from doing videography for their publicity in the Golden Temple complex. The move comes days after fashion designer Archana Makwana performed yoga at Harmandar Sahib. These decisions were taken in the SGPC Executive Committee meeting held in Amritsar. Fashion designer Makwana was booked for 'hurting religious sentiments' through yoga at the Golden Temple complex on June 21, International Yoga Day. However, Makwana apologized saying that he never intended to hurt anyone's religious sentiments.
