In a case related to the release and repatriation of Dr Aafia Siddiqui, the federal government informed the Islamabad High Court about Shakeel Afridi’s extradition in exchange for his release.
Justice Sardar Ijaz Ishaq Khan heard the case related to the release of Aafia Siddiqui and his return.
Federal Government Lawyer Additional Attorney General Munawar Iqbal Dugil informed the court that the proposal for the delivery of Shakeel Afridi in exchange for the release of Aafia Siddiqui was not viable.
Dr. Aafia Siddiqui’s American lawyer, Clive Smith, suggested in this regard.
During the hearing, the Additional Attorney General argued that Aafia Siddiqui had reservations on some of the matter in the draft of the petition filed in the US court.
Justice Sardar Ijaz Ishaq Khan remarked that Aafia Siddiqui’s government statement to withdraw from the support of a petition related to the release of the US court surprised the court.
The Islamabad High Court has ordered that the Additional Attorney General take instructions from the government, what is the objection to the petition of Aafia Siddiqui filed in the US court? The court took instructions to the Additional Attorney General and sought response by next Friday.
The Additional Attorney General argued that both Shakeel Afridi and Aafia Siddiqui are Pakistani, Pakistan has no agreement to exchange US prisoners.
Justice Sardar Ijaz Ishaq Khan asked why Shakeel Afridi is important to the United States, what is the status of Shakeel Afridi’s case? Judicial Assistant Zainab Janjua said Shakeel Afridi was convicted and the appeal was pending in the Peshawar High Court.
Fawzia Siddiqui’s lawyer, Imran Shafiq, said Shakeel Afridi was accused of assisting including espionage.
The Additional Attorney General said, “We have submitted a reply on February 19 in this regard, which Bayden rejected but did not respond to the letter.”
Justice Sardar Ijaz Ishaq Khan remarked that the White House did not respond to the letter but did not even do the Acknowledge, what happens if a country writes a letter to another.
The Islamabad High Court adjourned the hearing till next Friday.
