New Delhi: This happened about 4-5 days ago. The forest department team in Madhya Pradesh was shown a video by the people of Gowda village in Katni district. In this video, a baby elephant is seen walking along the river bank. As soon as the forest department team saw the baby, it was alerted and when it was investigated, it was found to be the calf of the elephant whose herd had eaten the fungus-infected elephants about a week ago. 10 elephants died after eating poisonous kudu and among them was the mother of this two-year-old elephant. After seeing the video, the forest department team swung into action and an operation was started to save the elephant. 100 forest department officials were involved in the operation. Besides, four trained elephants, doctors and a team of experts were also called from Kanha and Bandhogarh Tiger Reserves. After that, the work of tracking the elephant in a radius of 70 to 80 km began.

The rescue team, while searching for its mother, learned that the two-year-old elephant had reached the tiger’s territory through unknown and dangerous forests. Wildlife activist Ajay Dubey says it was very important to find the elephant as soon as possible, as many tigers roam the area. About two years ago, lions also killed a baby elephant.

Traveled 80 km in search of mother.

Baby elephants stay with their mother and other members of the herd to protect themselves from tigers. The elephant’s mother died after eating food contaminated with fungus and became separated from her herd. The elephant had traveled about 70 to 80 km in search of its mother and the forest department team was searching for it in every nook and cranny of the forest.

Finally got success

Eventually the team was successful and the innocent elephant was discovered. Now the second challenge was to bring it back safely. Forest department official L Krishnamurthy said that it is very difficult to predict the behavior of any wild animal. Apart from this, there are many difficulties in anesthetizing it. Since this elephant was separated from his family, he was under a lot of stress and it was important for the team to keep this in mind.

Trained elephants assisted the team.

In this case, four trained elephants called from Kanha and Bandhogarh Tiger Reserves helped the team. He not only kept the elephant calm but also helped bring it back. On the way he was given grass, bamboo shoots and water to eat. Through their efforts, the forest department team saved the elephant and brought it to the holding area where human presence is negligible.

A new family is being sought for the elephant.

A team of veterinarians from Karnataka has now been called in to help take care of him. Only pre-defined guidelines for elephants have been adopted. Under this, he was given only coconut water within the first 24 hours and now he will be breastfed for the next 45 days. He will then be reunited with the herd of elephants. A forest department team is tracking two herds of elephants for him, so that he can find a new family.
