Grab your Leviathan . TV/Amazon Prime Video series “God of War” from MGM Studios deadlineFor those of you who have been fans of the video game franchise of the same name, let’s immediately clarify a canon question: this new series is going to be based on the 2018 reboot version of the game, which takes its cues from 2005-2013. From Norse mythology, in contrast to the original series of games published until 1955, which were based on Greek mythology.

That doesn’t mean Greek mythology is completely off the table, as the 2018 game still features the same hero/player character of Kratos almost 150 years after 2010’s “God of War III” and this TV version. There may also be a lot of similarity. The backstory of a battle with the Greek gods on a mission of vengeance. All of this material seems to suit Moore, as the prolific television guru has used various elements of Earth mythology in his previous work for “Star Trek: The Next Generation,” “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine,” and “Battlestar Galactica.” Have dealt with. .” That latter series in particular could hint at what direction Moore might take “God of War,” given that “BSG” and “GoW” have similar themes of fathers and sons. In any case, this news is an exciting development coming from Moore’s recent deal with Sony Pictures Television, the production company with which he developed two other hit series: “Outlander” and “For All Mankind,” both of which have their own -The series is going to hit screens soon.

Will God of War be more action-oriented or drama-oriented?

At the moment, it’s not certain where Moore wants to take “God of War” as a series. Adapting pre-existing science-fiction/fantasy material is nothing new for them, given their history with “Trek,” “Battlestar,” and “Outlander,” as well as the anthology “Philip K. Dick’s Electric Dreams.” If “God of War” were being developed as a feature, it would undoubtedly have a larger focus on the game’s history of hack-n-slash gameplay. Given that 2018’s “God of War” game is a more emotional and thoughtful story of a father and son (while still clearly being an action game with RPG elements), it is perhaps this confusion of focus that made “God of War”. The series has lost its initial creative team of showrunner Rafe Judkins and executive producers Hawk Ostby and Mark Fergus. Moore’s work, by and large, tends to be more thoughtful and character-driven rather than focused on big action setpieces, and it’s possible that this shift signals the series moving in such a direction.

That said, it’s also possible that Sony/Amazon are looking to differentiate this series from a similarly themed upcoming Netflix series: Michael Bay’s “Barbaric,” which by all accounts looks like it’s going to be a lot of action. -Going to be focused. Even though Moore and his team may be looking to create their “God of War” take with more depth than Bay’s show, it can be safely said that their series will retain some of the game’s tough battles. Perhaps the change in focus will bring the show in line with another video game adaptation that has been praised for its depth, HBO Max’s “The Last of Us.” No matter how Moore and company end up, the showrunner is a very good person to bet on when it comes to success on the small screen. Like Kratos, Moore knows how to plan for the long term. We’ll see if he does it again when “God of War” comes to Prime Video in the near future.
