Bangladesh's Supreme Court rejected a lower court order that reinstated the quota last month. Attorney General AM Aminuddin has said that the Supreme Court has invalidated the decision of the High Court. Following the Supreme Court's decision, 5 percent of civil service jobs will be reserved for children of freedom struggle veterans and 2 percent for other categories. The court has appealed to all the students to leave the protest and return to the colleges. Due to which, the hope of stopping the violence that has been going on for many days in Bangladesh has now increased.
Relief to students from the decision of the Supreme Court!
Protests and violence erupted in Bangladesh after the High Court struck down the government's 2018 quota circular. This paved the way for 30 percent reservation in jobs for families of Bangladeshi freedom fighters. Against this, students came out on the streets and violence started. The government led by Sheikh Hasina was forced to impose a curfew and the army was deployed in the city after hundreds of people died in the violence. The decision of the High Court was also challenged by the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court admitted that the decision of the High Court was not correct and that the families of the people involved in the freedom movement in the country should not get 30% reservation. This decision is being termed as a big relief for the protesting students.
The Attorney General had filed an application seeking to set aside the High Court order that led to this decision. After massive protests against reservation, the Supreme Court ruled that almost all government jobs should be given on the basis of merit. It remains to be seen whether there will be a ban on protests in Bangladesh. This is because a large section is speaking in favor of 30% reservation.
