At least 13 people have been killed after an Indian Navy speedboat lost control and collided with a passenger ferry off the Mumbai coast, a Navy spokesperson said.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said the dead included three naval personnel, while more than 100 people were rescued.

Footage of the incident posted online showed the speedboat circling before colliding with the yacht, which then capsized.

The Indian Navy said there was an “engine failure”.

The privately owned boat was heading towards Elephanta Caves, a popular tourist destination, when it was hit by the speedboat.

“A naval ship undergoing engine tests lost control and collided with a passenger ferry,” the Navy said in a statement. Also said he regretted the “tragic loss” of life.

“The speedboat collided with our boat and water started entering our boat and it capsized. The driver asked us to wear lifejackets,” a passenger on board told ABP Majha news channel.

“I swam for 15 minutes before I was rescued by another boat,” said the passenger, who declined to be identified.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi posted: “The boat accident in Mumbai is tragic. Condolences to the bereaved families. I pray that the injured recover soon.”
