A new-look England team lost to West Indies by eight wickets in the rain-affected first ODI in Antigua.

The tourists slipped to 93-4 after being bowled, their inexperienced top order collapsing at the hands of Jaden Seales (2-22), with debutants Jordan Cox (17) and Jacob Bethell (27) unable to get off to a good start.

Gudakesh Moti (4-41) also performed brilliantly as England were bowled out for 209 in 45.1 overs.

Stand-in England captain Liam Livingstone (48) helped steady the innings by adding 72 runs with Sam Curran (37), but the tourists fell to 165-4 after Livingstone was dismissed by spinner Moti.

Livingstone is ahead but inexperienced England faltered

England openers Phil Salt (18) and Will Jacques (19) made a cautious start to the proceedings with a partnership of 35.

Things were looking positive for England, especially when Salt fired the third ball of the innings from Matthew Forde (2-48) through cover for four runs.

However, a brilliant catch from Alzarri Joseph while running back from cover gifted the West Indies the breakthrough after Salt toe-and-sealed it. Jack was dismissed 14 balls later by Moti’s delivery to Seals at mid-on.

Cox and Bethell managed to make good starts but lost disappointing strokes, the former toeing a slower ball to Carty at deep third and the latter having both Ford’s balls caught at extra cover.

Livingstone revived England’s innings with two sixes and was given extra life after Shimron Hetmyer dropped his catch at the score of 44, but he could not take advantage of the opportunity after being caught and bowled by Moti. .

Moti then struck twice in two balls, dismissing two debutants like Dan Mooseley, who fell to a slog-sweep, and then Jamie Overton LBW on a sweep. Curran became Moti’s fourth victim after being caught by Hetmyer at long-on.

Adil Rashid (15) hit a few fours to take his team past 200, while Archer scored seven runs and dismissed Joseph behind Hope.

West Indies quickly cleaned up the tail when Rashid dismissed John Turner (No. 2) to mid-on with 4.5 overs remaining.

At the start of the chase, the required run-rate for West Indies was just over four and their openers made the powerplay motoring to a maximum of 46-0.

Lewis managed to hit five sixes and a four and took the England bowlers to 2,000 runs in ODI cricket.

King hit three fours during his blistering 42-ball innings and escaped an England review after being hit by Rashid’s googly, ball-tracking showed the impact was outside the off stump, before rain caused proceedings to be halted. Was stopped.

England got the wicket of King when he had Livingstone caught at deep square leg by Jacques, before Rashid took the prized wicket of Lewis.

Livingstone: England did not adapt well

England captain Liam Livingstone at the presentation:

“I think it’s just the rhythm of 50-over cricket. We’ve still got a few weeks left so we’re trying to pick up the pace and get the rhythm back.

“We know someone in the top six has to score big for us and unfortunately we couldn’t do that today.

“Fifty overs is a long time. We want to put West Indies under pressure and things will change from game to game. I don’t think we have adapted well. West Indies have taken wickets at regular moments.”

“Joff [Jofra Archer] We are looking dangerous with the new ball and John Turner is also looking good.”

Asha: We asked for early wickets

West Indies captain Shai Hope at the presentation:

“We always ask the opening bowlers to set the tone and take early wickets and that’s what they did today.

“We were a lot more consistent and discipline is the biggest factor for us. We just have to be as patient and disciplined as we can.”

“I was pleased to see Lewis and King getting off to good starts with the bat.”
