Because the “Harry Potter” book series is written mostly from Harry’s perspective, many minor characters receive remarkably little page time to make a proper impact. Especially in the first few books where the author was trying to keep the pace light and spontaneous, you’ll be surprised upon re-reading how little material we got about fan-favorite characters like Neville, McGonagall, the Weasley twins, etc. The focus is always on the core trio of Harry, Ron, and Hermione, with everyone else just stopping by here and there. Even Dumbledore, whose presence looms so large over the entire series, only talks to Harry about once every two hundred pages. In fact, the two barely interact in “Prisoner of Azkaban.” (Hermione actually gets more time with Harry than she does in the movie.)
Luna Lovegood is one of many characters who far exceeds her page count. She appears out of nowhere in “Order of the Phoenix” and is absent for large parts of “Deathly Hallows”, but on the strength of her eccentricity she has become one of the top ten characters for many readers and viewers. . It helps that she’s the first in-depth introduction to the house of Ravenclaw in the series, and her aloof swagger means there’s a refreshing lack of relationship drama with her compared to the rest of the teen characters.
The result is that, 17 years after the conclusion of the last book, a lot of fans are still interested in what happened to Luna after the Battle of Hogwarts. We have no doubt that she will be successful in life, perhaps as the new Hogwarts fortune teller professor, but who will she marry? A lot of fans wanted her to end up with Neville and a lot of other fans wanted her to end up with Harry. But according to JK Rowling, Luna’s husband is a person whom no book reader would have predicted. As Rowling Explained in a 2007 interview,
“Luna became a very famous wizard naturalist, discovering and classifying many new species of animals (although, alas, she never found the Crumple-Horned Snork and eventually, she had to admit that her father made her will be)., She married (rather than later than Harry & Co.) a fellow naturalist and grandson of the great Newt Scamander (Rolfe).”

Is Rowling’s explanation canon? I’d say it’s as canon as the events of “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” – I mean, it’s entirely up to you, no matter what Rowling says outside of the text. But if you accept Rowling’s answer, you’re probably wondering who Rolf is. After all, he’s not in the books. Given that everyone else in the main trio is married to their high school girlfriend, who is this strange outsider Luna settling down with?
There isn’t a lot of information for fans to work with here. rolf is only mentioned In an early draft of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows”, not in the published version, although he was apparently so important to Rowling’s mind that she kept Luna’s actress Evanna Lynch constantly updated about him while she was writing the book. If Rolf had been included in the final novel, what would he have been doing? Reportedly, he would have been the one who narrated the Tale of the Three Brothers to the main trio, rather than Xenophilius Lovegood.
In 2014, the Potter-themed website Pottermore included a daily prophet articles Written by beloved sleazeball journalist Rita Skeeter, Rolf is described as “the dark grandson of the famous wizard Newt”, and notes that he and Luna had twin sons. (The children were named Lorcan and Lysander, which seems fitting for Luna’s children.) It seems that Rolf is the more “normal” half of the couple, although he still enjoys learning about strange and unfamiliar magical creatures. Shares Luna’s fondness for. Although in the book Luna ends up marrying Rolf, the films end with the somewhat disturbing implication that Luna may marry Neville Longbottom. “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2″ certainly doesn’t go into too much detail on the topic – all the characters are too busy fighting the Dark Lord and others – but Neville does briefly mention how he Crazy,” and wants to tell him how he feels before he potentially dies in battle. I think it’s cool, even though there’s nothing in any of the previous movies to indicate that these two are interested in each other. It seems as if the screenwriters wanted to give Luna a memorable note to end on, as the book doesn’t give her any big hero moments like we get with Neville. What’s worse, it feels like the writers paired Neville with the only major female character they could think of who didn’t have a boyfriend yet.
If you buy into the theory that the movie Neville/Luna was a permanent thing, perhaps the biggest issue with this pairing of these two is that it makes the Wizarding World feel too small. If so many of the main characters are marrying their high school sweethearts, it creates the feeling that Hogwarts is the only meaningful thing here, and none of these characters have meaningful experiences outside of school.
At least the good news for Neville/Luna haters is that Evanna Lynch doesn’t think these two are long-term goals. “Luna wants to go out and explore the world and different creatures, and I think she wants to have a lot of different relationships and not be committed forever,” she Said in a 2016 interview”Neville wants a good strong wife who cooks, and she’s not the one.”
Who did Harry Potter fans want to see Luna with?
Luna’s life after Hogwarts is a bit of a disappointment for some “Harry Potter” fans because, well, they would have liked it better if Luna had ended up with Harry. This may seem like an odd pairing to some, especially since in the books Harry is often annoyed at Luna’s strange behavior, but some Potterheads are so invested in the ship that they will write 70k+-word fanfiction Anyway about that.
The gist of Luna/Harry shipping is that both of their personalities are different in fun and compelling ways. Harry is a simple boy who just wants to feel normal and be accepted by his peers, while Luna is an eccentric hippie who doesn’t care at all what others think of her. Both could learn something from each other; Just as Ron and Hermione’s contrasting personalities complement each other, some fans argue that the extreme ends of Harry and Luna’s personalities can balance each other out in a serious romance.
Of course, the main reason Luna/Harry is shipped so often is because the canon ship, Ginny and Harry, is considered so weak. In the movies in particular, Ginny as a girlfriend doesn’t give fans anything to work with: there’s no chemistry between the actors, and her entire story seems like a bunch of movies on top of a bunch that’s quite complex. Ginny’s book is a little better, having had more time to make a lasting impression on readers, but she still lacks the spark as a character that Luna had from day one. Luna is effortlessly likeable and nice, while it feels like the books are trying their best to convince us that Ginny is nice, with mixed results. Ginny and Harry may be canon, but in the hearts of some fans, Luna and Harry are the perfect couple.
