With the defeat in the Sydney Test, Team India’s dominance over the Border-Gavaskar Trophy for the last 7 years also ended. Australia also qualified for the final of the World Test Championship by winning the series 3-1 along with the trophy. The defeat has left the entire Indian team reeling, with most eyes focused on captain Rohit Sharma and former captain Virat Kohli. Both of them have been poor throughout the series and now everyone wants to know if their journey in the Test team is over. Coach Gautam Gambhir did not answer the question directly but made it clear through gestures that the team can do without him in the future.
Sunday, January 5, was only the third day of the Sydney Test and the match was over before the end of the day. Along with this, the series of 5 Test matches which started from November 22 also ended which went in favor of Australia after 10 years. Most of the players failed to perform as expected for Team India in this series but the most shocking performance was from captain Rohit and Virat. Rohit scored only 31 runs in 5 innings while Virat could score only 190 runs in 9 innings.
‘Can’t talk about anyone’s future’
Ever since this performance, there have been calls for both of them to be dropped from the Test team forever. Rohit dropped himself from the Sydney Test but Virat continued to play and failed. After the Sydney Test, when coach Gambhir was asked about the future of the great players in the press conference, Gambhir did not make any announcement but said that there is still hunger within the players. “I can’t say anything about the future of any player,” said the Indian head coach. It depends on them. All I can say is that the people are still hungry, there is still passion and these are tough people.
Gambhir gave the hint.
But Gambhir also made it clear that the team’s interests must be kept in mind. “Hopefully he will take Team India forward but at the end of the day whatever plan he makes, hopefully it will be in the interest of Team India,” he said. That is, Gambhir directly put the ball in the court of both the superstar players to decide in the interest of the team. It has also indicated that if the players want a dignified farewell, they should decide to opt out on their own or they may be dropped. Team India is now scheduled to tour England directly in June, where 5 Test matches will be played.
